japanese input method

hi i followed instructions on the forum's how to for japanese scim
input installation. installation went smooth. problem now it i can't
use it.
it doesn't work right. 
i cannot type in hiragana and translate to kanjis. none of the
japanese input methods work. has anybody got this to work?
