estou com um problema "parecido".

depois de recompilar manualmente o kernel (pois precisava de um patch
em um modulo) eu não consigo mais montar nenhuma das partições do hd
sata.
instalei o ubuntu em um ide a partir do cd do 6.06. até ai ele
reconhecia o hd normalmente. após recompilar o kernel, mesmo ativando
todos os drivers sata necessarios não consegui mais acessar o hd.

Jeronimo:
uma sugestão para vc seria instalar o ubuntu em um pc com hd ide e
depois usar algum programa (o qual não me recordo o nome)  e  "clonar"
o hd ide para o sata.
depois vc poderia fazer as atualizações necessarias para que o cdrom
funcionasse.
