I use smartmon tools and while I haven't had any nasty errors yet, it's
certainly reassuring to know that my disks aren't too hot and there's
nothing creeping up on my.

You can use the daemon to monitor continuously, and run regular tests,
or use smartctl to do spot tests.

Maybe Ubuntu could have a GUI interface that could trigger tests and
show the results? Unfortunately, disks vary a lot in what they can do.
