Sorry for the bad explanation. I expected after installing nvidia-glx and adding
"nvidia" as the line in my Xorg.conf file that X would load. It does not. And, I
can't modprobe nvidia. And, the nvidia driver does not seem to exist on my
system.

$ uname -r -v
2.6.12-7-386 #1 Fri Aug 19 12:50:02 UTC 2005

After doing:
$sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx linux-restricted-modules-386
...
Setting up linux-restricted-modules-common (2.6.12.2-6) ...
Setting up linux-restricted-modules-2.6.12-7-386 (2.6.12.2-6) ...
Setting up linux-restricted-modules-386 (2.6.12.11) ...
Setting up nvidia-glx (1.0.7667-0ubuntu7) ...
Creating NVIDIA TLS links... done
$sudo nvidia-glx-config enable

X does not start. -> because the nvidia driver is not loaded
and
$ modprobe nvidia
FATAL: Module nvidia not found.

Looking in synaptic at the files installed by
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.12-7-386 (2.6.12.2-6) I would expect nvidia.ko to
be there. It is not.
