OK, I see I have the wrong end of the stick. You are no longer using
K12LTSP at all.
So now what happens to those 100 plus schools where the Tuxlabs are
K12LTSP based?
What's the upgrade process? How does data, home directories and
usernames get easily imported into what is a very different distro? I
am asking this because I am interested in converting about 33
schools, widely dispersed over four provinces to the Ubuntu-based
distro. Since the cost of going to each site to upgrade is
prohibitive, we need a way for the centre manager to just boot off a
CD and K12LTSP magically becomes Skubuntu. This is a big ask, I know,
but essential, since our site admins (with maybe one or two
exceptions) do not yet have the technical expertise to manually back
up user data and usernames, install a new distro and put everything
back.

customise K12LTSP, but now it's been moved over to Ubuntu. The
original tuXlab scripts only made some modifications to the

Yes, the plan is to have at least a 'skubuntu' release with every
enterprise release of Ubuntu, and perhaps use the inbetween Ubuntu
versions as preview releases. Who knows, perhaps I'll manage full
releaases with every release of Ubuntu, it also depends on the
outcomes of edubuntu.
3. Following on the above: If Skubuntu "may die" what happens to
all the schools that have already installed it? Will upgrades
continue to be available to them? or must they change to
something else (Edubuntu) if they wish to remain up to date?
I'm glad you asked this. Skubuntu is based directly off Ubuntu, if
a school wants to switch to Edubuntu, they would simply insert
their EdUbuntu CD and select the appropriate meta-package. Or at
least, that's the plan according to the wiki :). Perhaps you'd just
add the CD in Synaptic and do a dist-upgrade. This is something
I'll sort out when EdUbuntu hits release.
When Edubuntu is released though, Skubuntu will be an add-on to
EdUbuntu, rather than a plain Ubuntu, so if Skubuntu will die, it
will have a small effect on on the schools, since Skubuntu will
only be an add-on containing things like Moodle, etc. which might
be included in EdUbuntu by default in the end.
The most likely path of Skubuntu's death would be if it's obsoleted
by EdUbuntu, which isn't at all a bad thing. Until EdUbuntu suits
the purpose of the tuXlab project, Skubuntu will be going on adding
stuff to it to make it more suitable for schools.
