I would much rather see vector art being produced for backgrounds, calendars etc. Photos are problematic in the sense of file size and subject matter. Backgrounds are simply that - backgrounds. Simple, non-distracting , pleasing to the eye images are best. From a professional standpoint, detailed backgrounds are just too distracting. If you want to have a picture of your cat on your screen, go nuts. Its your desktop. But for the general populace, Keep It Simple, Sir :)

Does the Ubuntu art group accept Photo submissions?
As I said in my previous reply, I think the best solution would be a
flickr.com or similar account for a photographer, as I don't think
it's really necessary to turn art.ubuntu.com into a photo gallery
website. If there are other art team members with good servers that
could run photo gallery software, perhaps they could offer to host
straight up open-source (or Creative Common) licensed photography.
Another option is a site run by a fellow Ubuntu user called
imageafter.com. It's basically a big, free, stock photography website.
