PPPoE

A few questions about PPPoE:

1. Is it used by any ISP in Israel ?
2. How much it's popular abroad ?
3. Do I need a special client to handle it or I can use an old pair pppd/pptp ?
4. What other methods (that I can not handle with pptp) are used by ISPs for 
broadband connections ?
