Subject: epson 740 printing background horizontal lines/scratces SuSE 9.1

Hi

Has anyone seen this problem? Here is my post to Suse forum so far but have'nt got answer so far. I am still experiencing this problem.

I am using SuSE 9.1 and the epson color 740 is printing unwanted horizontal line throughout the page. I don't think it is a printer problem since I did not get this in SuSE 9.0. I have upgraded the cups driver 'cups-1.1.20-103', 'cups-drivers-1.1.20-66.1' and the latest gimp-print ' gimp-print-5.0.0-alpha2-1'. I selected the PPD file in Yast as Foomatic/gimp-print for the epson 740.

The printer prints ok but these horizontal lines appear throughout the page. I have been searching the web but can't get answer.

Anybody got the same

You aren't by any chance printing from Windows running under VMware when this happens?

Hi

I am replying to myself, it's like talking to oneself but I suppose it lets you know what kind of problems we are having.

I was getting fed up with the horizontal lines in the printing, like scratches so I deleted all cups, driver, libs, client etc and installed the SuSE 9.0 cups ' 1.1.19-75' version. It's early days of course yet but the printing does seem to be better, although I have only printed a couple of pages. So I will wait with fingers crossed to test results, Will keep ye all informed!

hi

Back again with the latest. I am not getting much help from the forum! Anyway no luck, the horizontal lines/scratches are back even with the old cups. Here is what new thing I tried.

1 Hooked up a laptop running Window 2000 and the printer responded brilliantly, quicker and type much sharper

2 Back ot SuSE deleted foomatic filter and installed SuSE 9 foomatic filter. No good lines again and type much fainter than windows

3 Reinstalled SuSE 9.1's all things cups and foomatic filter No good!

3 Hooked up the printer using parallel port and configured it in Yast, thinking it may be a 'usb' thing but unfortunately this did not work. Still got the lines.

So I am back to square but I do know it's not the printer which operated great in Windows.

So any help would be appreciated.

Can't believe nobody has had this problem.

My next move was to hook up another laptop with this printer using suse 9.1 and the result was the same horizontal lines throughout the page.

The only time I've seen something like you describe occurs when I print from Windows XP (client) from SuSE 9.1 Pro (Vmware host) and use a PCL driver. If I use a Postscript driver for my HP 4550DN from the Windows XP Vmware session, everything is fine. I just haven't seen your particular problem outside of that scenario.

The latest with my problem

It seems that the printer now works properly ppd foomatic/stcolor but only with that file . However scratches appear when printing in the gimp with this ppd file. The other option were

1 Foomatic/gimp-print
2 Foomatic/print-ijs
3 CUPS+Gimp-Print

All drivers worked in the Gimp but all produced scratches/lines.

Outside Gimp

2 & 3 did not work at all and 1 which was recommended was the one which produced all the scratches/lines througout the page.

Does this mean that this printer cannot use gimp-print? Or maybeit only works with graphics or in the gimp?

We shall see but in the meantime I will use the 4th option, it's pretty good with text, so far!

Oh, the epson stylus color 740 although old is a great wee printer.
