2) Nestor, thanks for initiating discussion with the Inkscape folks.
Your answers were accurate. Can you continue to be the interface
point, at least until I'm back?

They are very busy featuring freezeing and bug hunting for next
release 0.39. Maybe better wait.

Sure.

Gutenprint everybody?

My database request for having an easy and comprenhensive search
method for future or already users. You mean dumping from the
applications database to a SQL command?

What I'm thinking is that all of the printers that we know about
should be accessible via the menus in the GIMP plugin or CUPS or
Foomatic. This does, of course, mean PPD file bloat.

But this means install before knowing it works.
If I am a regular user I will check the site for my printer before installing or upgrading. Just my opinion.

What we do for ESP Print Pro is build a flat file ("printers.dat")
which lists the model names, languages, PPD filenames, and package
names, and then we search that from a PHP page. The file is built
along with the drivers themselves, and then we just update the copy
on the web server when we do a release. The page is at:

http://www.easysw.com/printpro/printers.php

It would be trivial to implement this with the CUPS genppd code,
and I'd be happy to donate the PHP code for searching it...
