My little experience is that the updated ALSA driver on the website
fixed audio problems for me on Mandrake / KDE.  I know KDE uses arts to
manage its sound, there are some settings hidden away in the KDE config
I believe to set buffer size, might be worth a look.

(BTW Ed, you're doing great work with your distro :-) )
