Grub news: msg#00236linux.ports.xbox.devel
Some small encouraging news with cromwell. It is now able to boot up grub fully, but then after a couple of seconds' disc activity it falls silent. I know that grub is starting (involving many sectors being pulled from the HDD okay) because I overrode int 10h and made it dump to a RAM buffer which I can inspect on the next reboot 00000170: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 : 00 49 44 45 30 2D 30 3A .........IDE0-0: 00000180: 20 53 54 33 31 30 32 31 : 31 41 20 41 54 41 2D 34 ST310211A ATA-4 00000190: 20 48 61 72 64 2D 44 69 : 73 6B 20 64 65 76 69 63 Hard-Disk devic 000001A0: 65 0D 0A 00 00 00 00 49 : 44 45 30 2D 31 3A 20 54 e......IDE0-1: T 000001B0: 48 4F 4D 53 4F 4E 2D 44 : 56 44 20 41 54 41 50 49 HOMSON-DVD ATAPI 000001C0: 2D 34 20 43 44 2D 52 4F : 4D 20 64 65 76 69 63 65 -4 CD-ROM device 000001D0: 0D 0A 0D 0A 47 52 55 42 : 20 4C 6F 61 64 69 6E 67 ....GRUB Loading 000001E0: 20 73 74 61 67 65 31 2E : 35 2E 0D 0A 0D 0A 0D 0A stage1.5....... 000001F0: 47 52 55 42 20 6C 6F 61 : 64 69 6E 67 2C 20 70 6C GRUB loading, pl 00000200: 65 61 73 65 20 77 61 69 : 74 2E 2E 2E 0D 0A 00 00 ease wait....... Here is the contents of /boot/grub/menu.lst hiddenmenu timeout 1 default 0 title linux kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 devfs=mount kbd-reset initrd (hd0,1)/boot/initrd As I understand it the hiddenmenu should just remove all of the grub user interface. I had a look at 0xb8000 and 0xa0000 to see if there was any text or graphics placed there and there isn't. It seems to me that either grub is stalling, perhaps waiting for input that never comes, perhaps trying to init a nonexistant VGA BIOS, or that Linux is starting and oopsing right away. Much as I would love to believe the latter there is nothing in /var/log/messages to suggest its true. Any ideas welcome, as usual! -Andy ------------------------------------------------------- This sf.net email is sponsored by:ThinkGeek Welcome to geek heaven. http://thinkgeek.com/sf |
