Hi Ben,

It so happens to be I and another person have just started a project
concerning a linux distro for the HP 6x0 series (680/690 and 620LX/660LX
machines). My fellow developer has built a few kernels, including one for the
620LX. You can get it from the downloads section on
http://195.241.12.117/jlime (temporary address, domain is pending). It hasn't
been tested, you're welcome to try it and inform us on how it works. It has
some custom patches applied, my co-developer has sources for those. One
reason your kernel could be hanging is if it's a bzImage, shlo only seems to
support zImage. Also, it can take more than 30 seconds for the kernel to
boot, but I figure you've waited longer than that.
The userland we are creating for our distro (based on uclibc if everything
works out) will be intended for the 620LX as well, but we only just started
the project so our userland is still pretty much non-existent (apart from a
busybox build).
We would very much appreciate if you would combine forces with us to create a
decent distro. Check out our website for more details.
About your disappearing /etc dir, I myself have been running a version of
2.5.24 which is probably built from the same sources (but for HP 690
instead), and I've never experienced anything like that. However, I don't
think I ever halted the system, I always reboot. Since there's no power
management support yet you'll end up at the same point... being Windows CE.

Hope to be hearing from you,

Henk
