Or use the macmini Lirc userspace driver.

using kernel 2.6.25.6 (with debian testing) I don't see any appleir modules..
in mactel patches too..

lircd -n -H macmini -d /dev/usb/hiddev0 /etc/lirc/lircd.conf
The same with irrecord. The hiddev0 should correspond to you IR sensor.
