In case anyone runs into the same problem, here's what I did to get
things working again:

Booted off of the live Ubuntu CD
Mounted and chrooted into my system (see e.g. http://bin-false.org/?p=17)
apt-get to reinstall the linux-image
lilo -b /dev/sda
reboot
