Subject: Re: Re: Familiar v0.8.4 out !

Hi Iliya,

Let me put both my points another way :)

I cc'd my reply to the list because you sent me a private message
that was list related (see the last paragraph of this post:
http://www.handhelds.org/hypermail/h2200-port/0/0000.html ).
This is done for a number of reasons, not the least of which is
that I am not the only person who might be able to help you.

By more detail, I don't mean more words :)
Lay out your problem, with detailed explanations of each step
that you took to get there, and, if possible, to try be more
'concise and direct' with your language to avoid misunderstanding.

Hi Iliya,

This is a port-related msg, please excuse me for cc'ing the list.

No.
Provide (a _lot_) more detail and someone on the list might be
willing to assist you.

Regards,

Marcus.

Well, I've encountered this message when I've written images of LAB and original bootloaders to two different CF cards, both are 32M. I've tried
two different LAB versions: the one mentioned in the manual and the one included with Familiar.

Which manual, which version? Use version numbers please.

AFAIK a 32MB card is not big enough to save/restore the ROM.
From memory I think the file produced by a dump is about 34MB.
This is probably the source of your error.

> I've tried them to boot the installation on my
512 CF card made by RamRescue - everything by default except the release - stable instead of RC.

You were trying to boot Familiar 0.8.4, on a 512MB CF card?
You installed using RamdiskRescue?

> Both failed - the screen have changed to black
with no further progress.

Both what failed?
I can only see mention of one installation.
How long did you wait?
More detail please.

Do you have a serial cable? (or a soldering iron?)

> But when I 've tried to return the original
bootloader, I haven't encountered any problems - the iPaq booted properly, despite the "Segmentation fault" error.

Return to the original bootloader? WinCE's?
There's a possibility you are going to come to grief if my theory
about the 32MB card not being big enough is correct.
A segfault is not a nice error to see when transferring data,
and would tend to suggest that the resultant data was corrupt,
despite your belief otherwise. I suggest you use more caution.

So could this error be the cause of LAB malfunctioning?

Possibly.

P.S.:My desktop is Ubuntu 6.06

Ah, right ... Linux .. (and a version number!).. great.
How about you keep logs of what you do, when you are doing something
"important"?
ie.
- title
Date: Attempt to blow up iPaq
- type a command in console
# explode
- clip and paste command+result into a text editor.
# explode
Please wait while cooking in progress.
- add notes
"Machine burst into flames"

Then when something happens, you can post your notes (as an attachment).
Sound like an idea?

Now, please feel welcome to CC me .... but PLEASE send port-related
message TO THE LIST!

Regards,

Marcus.
