The only problem I have is there is no "/dev/mtd3" device...however there is
a "/dev/mtdblock3".

Are these the same? The instructions caution not to mistype /dev/mtd3.

Not the same.

You need module mtdchar built for your kernel version for it to work correctly.

mtd controls directly the NAND Flash. Orders it to erase, for example.

MTDBlock is the memory. In other words, you mount the mtdblock to
access your data.
