As Marcus said, I'd expect you don't need an initrd with standard images in OE
for booting from an MMC/SD card.

detailed guide fro booting with Haret.

Summarizing:
Partition the card in two, a vfat one for haret.exe, zImage and startup.txt,
and an ext2 one in which untarring the root filesystem image.
Startup.txt:
set KERNEL zImage
set MTYPE 341
set CMDLINE "root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 console=ttyS0,115200n8"
bootlinux

Another common method of booting is natively via LAB
