Subject: flakey install 2210. how to bring up networking/etc?

Hi,

Please bare with me as I get my bearings. After trying to install the
different 8.3 snapshots(opie and gpe) and failing every time I came across
this posting http://handhelds.org/hypermail/h2200-port/37/3718.html and I
managed to boot into GPE2.7(haret.exe works but not wrap-haret.exe) -
hurray! Although a number of things don't work(screen rotate applet) I like
it.

I now need to get network access but since I have been allowing
Mandrake/Mandriva to lobotomise(I do love it in reality but I will be moving
on soon) me on the desktop for the last 4 years I have no idea how to get
the networking going(I know how to configure it and start the service in
Mandrake - "services network start"). At work I have my XP machine synced
with the win mobile 2003 through Active Sync and now I would like to get
networking through the USB cable. I tried to follow the instructions at
http://www.handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/WindowsXpUsbNetworkHowTo for familiar
>=8.3 but then it asks for a reboot which I did by opening a root terminal
and typing reboot. I then end up with a brick(no soft reset). I removed the
battery, hard reseted etc and I was back to a plain version of win. I then
went to my sd card and tried to run haret again the thermometer started
filling up and all of a sudden bits from the win screen started appearing
underneath the tux screen(such as the clock).

Back to following the entire procedure again. this time I thought that I
would try to run /sbin/ifup usb0 but it was reporting that there was no usb0
and the same for eth0.  I tried installing the linux.inf driver on the win
XP computer anyway but although I uninstalled ActiveSync when plugging in
the USB cable the pc would not ask for any drivers.

I suppose I have a lot of questions that I am hoping some of you may have
answers to such as how do you start the networking? both for wlan, wlan with
wpa(I found the wpa_supplicant file in etc but still don't know how to start
networking). i can see the configuration application in gpe but I can not
see any start networking button.

Because the first partition on my SD card is a 650mb fat partition I mounted
it by adding "/dev/mmcblk0p1 /mnt/sd_vfat auto" to the fstab and I can now
mount it as root. Am I right in assuming that familiar does not have
automount? Can any user mount a partition?

Is there a way to convert the filesystem to some journaled version(ext3) so
that I do not have to rebuild the filesystem and place the ext2 image on it
every time I reboot(how do you reboot in a non destructive way?)

Ideally I would like to get Opie installed although I like the look of GPE
because I need to sync with Outlook at work and perhaps Opie is more
intuitive. Has anyone managed to get an Opie image running on the
2210(links?) and perhaps on a journaled file system so you can reboot
without starting over again(TomTom is on my win side and I use it every now
and then by restoring a backup)?

Thanks for reading and any answer would be appreciated including rtfm as
long as you have a link to the manual ;)

Cristi
