***The Kindle only uses non-DRM'ed Mobipocket. In other words, Amazon
doesn't work with your purchased Mobipocket books - only AZW books which
have to be purchased through the EVDO connection (if you don't have EVDO
in your area, you can't buy books for it at all). All conversion (TXT,
Non-DRM'ed MOBI & Non-DRM'ed PRC don't need conversion) has to go
through Amazon's Whispermail system (mailed to Amazon, they convert to
AZW, then mail it to your reader), which may be screening for whatever
Amazon considers to be piracy (which may actually be within the bounds
of fair use). I'm more than a little suspicious regarding this.

***Actually not every ebook company screws it's people over.
Amazon/Mobipocket have a track record of it, but accusing Sony based on
someone else's actions seems unwarranted. Timebook Town (Japan only
ebook store) flopped and Sony learned a lot from that.

***It's not a matter of keeping it on a server. It's a matter of the
licensing servers going down and purchased books being unreadable due to
that. That happened on Amazon's watch, quite possibly while they were
upgrading them to handle the activation of AZW files for the Kindle
(this is of course just supposition - but the timing was right).
Mobipocket is now owned by Amazon and they've dumped their old formats
before. That's why I personally choose not to buy Mobipocket: despite
greater selection, I cannot support the kind of company that just pumps
out ebooks and then dumps their customers leaving them with no product.

Re: how to select an ebook reader
Finally someone with some information. Actually this is listed as the libre and irex list. Which is why I am here, trolling for information. I only had to hear that sony was a you buy at my bookstore or go without to put it on my "not in my life time list". This isn't my first rodeo when it comes to e-readers and propriety book stores. So far I haven't found a living iRex user, even on the other site. Kindle looked good, until I found it was not listed as using the mobipocket, just mobi which may not be the same. Also why wouldn't Amazon use their own site for the books? So far no answers to that one either. Look, I am not knocking the Sony as a reader, well other than the lack of books. It
looks beautiful, the output is wonderful and it looks nice to hold. The kindle, well, it also has an impressive output and so does the iRex. However, good battery longevity, great screen and nice handling is a bonus, for a reader it is all about the books available. If you are limited to only one bookstore, and reading books is why you purchased the critter than you are asking to be shafted, and hung out to dry. If you are only an occasionally reader and using it mostly for your own stuff, then you need to find one that allows you to create your own and carry it on the reader. Now I understand some of the comments. I have 300 plus books in mobipocket format, 200 plus book
s in the ereader format and a couple of hundred in the rb format. I have been to the mobipocket.com site for 4 of those. Re: how to select an ebook reader
I turned down the Kindle because it is also going to be a you have to buy from us kinda ebook. Here is a company that owns the mobipocket ebook store, they create an ebook that cannot even use the DRMed ebooks the sell, and you know why, because you or I or the rest of the people who buy their reader might go to some other ebook seller and buy there. That is the bottom line, and that is the bottom line for all the ebook makers who decide to tie you to a new format that they control so if you want the newer ebooks that have to be DRMed, you have to buy from them.. If that floats your boat then go for it. If it doesn't bother you then go for it. I read too much to be hoping that they come out with enough books I want to read. I cannot be tied to that kind
of reader. However, who ever gave you the idea that all mobipocket ebooks are DRMed, was sorely lacking in information. I have plenty of non drm mobipocket ebooks. They come from fictionwise, they come from Baen Books and a half dozen other ebook sellers. So they would probably work, however I am not picking on any ereader unless they, the creators, decide that you have to buy your books from them. It just doesn't work, there is no such thing as a single book store having all the books that I want to read. Even in real paper made book stores it just doesn't or didn't happen. I am against any ebook reader that you cannot go
to at least a couple of different ebook stores and yes in different countries and purchase ebooks that will work on your reader. I will not be bound by someone's idea of what I should or can read. There is nothing wrong with the Sony, or the Kindle, if you don't mind only buying what they have, what they are willing to get to sell you. The one thing you say that I don't understand, there was never a time that my mobipocket books did not work. I have been reading them every day for the last year and I cannot understand how their server would effect the ebooks I have on my computer, cds, dvds, or on my reader. They are
not in contact with that server and I believe they don't really care if it is up or down. Nor did fictionwise ever announce that no mobipocket ebook could be sold because a server that amazon owned was down. Once I put the ebook on my reader it has my pin/id/password and approves of me opening the ebook. I use no software to do this, I just drag and drop. However you are correct, I believe I have worn out my welcome here, I have found that this list doesn't have any live iRex users that I may question about their reader. So I am off to europe where I have found more information on the iRex and on another reader from i believe france or holland. One of the two places, no blue tooth, no wi
fi, no hoops to jump through to get books. Uses Mobipocket format with and without drm. Just have to insult my mac and put xp on it.
