Have you checked your E-Trex Configuration. 
You can use your E-Trex with gpsdrive to show the actual position. I think for 
this the easiest would be to set  your e-trex to NMEA Mode. But don't expect 
any good position until you wait some time to have enough satelites in 
visible range.


If you want to download Tracks from your Garmin GPS, you might want to check 
out garble. To use your E-Trex with garble you'll have to configure your GPS 
to talk Garmin Mode on the serial.
Then do something like
        garble -d /dev/ttyS0 -t
