I'm not terribly good at crafting search queries, but there seems to
be a lot of fluff projects on SourceForge -- projects that were
created and went nowhere. SF illustrates some of the biggest
problems with open source; no guides, and much wasted effort. If
only those developers worked to improve existing projects... oh
well, that's why I'm trying to help out with this project, instead of
starting my own. That, and I'm too lazy to start my own! :)
Yeah. Roadmap is the only other mapping project that really took off. It has
the distinct advantage of being the only viable vector mapping solution for
Linux.
Interestingly enough, the Roadmap devs have a goal stated for their 1.1 branch
(whenever it gets started) of increasing modularity, just like there is a lot
of desire (and possibly effort) for GPSDrive to have support for arbitrary
rendering plugins. I wonder if a merge between the two projects sometime in
the future might be possible. GPSDrive has a nice polished interface (which I
find far better than RoadMap's), RoadMap has the distinct advantage of havine
one feature that is the Holy Grail of many moving-map projects - vector street
map support.
Although there isn't much that SF or Berlios provide for anyone who has the
hosting and time to set up their own tools, which it sounds like you
have since
you just put up a bug/feature DB. SF is definately NOT needed for
publicity. These days a high Google ranking is all that matters, and
GPSDrive is the
easiest of the moving-map GPS programs for Linux to find.
I agree completely. While I do have access to hosting and time to
set up the appropriate tools, I think I'm going to be changing the
server environment. It's currently on a shared server with several
other projects, and I'd rather host it in a more exclusive
environment. But, that won't be for another couple weeks probably.
Just like it is going to be a couple of weeks (if ever) before I have
the Python
bindings to the RoadMap backend in a usable state, which could be used as "map
fetcher" for GPSDrive in theory.
