Unfortunately, I would not be surprised if NavTeq would forbid
licensing their
data for use with any open-source application because of their desire to
license the data based on the features of the application. (e.g. voice
prompts/routing/etc are extra $$$). Note that they want people to
sign an NDA
just to obtain *PRICING* information on their data.
Unless, of course, we want to pay the full price for all features,
which, as I envision it:
* Handheld device support
* Speech recognition
* Text-to-speech
* Heads-up display (projection on windshield)
* POI
* Multiple tracks
* Traffic flow monitoring
* 3D display, including topographical warping of map
* Routing, including dynamic re-routing
* WiFi mapping
* (any other features that someone brilliant can come up with)
Some of these features are already there, most aren't, but will be
eventually.
After thinking about the various features I'd like to see included, I
decided not to follow up on the NavTeq queries. Some day, someone will
bother to do this, but not me, now. Instead, I'm going to play around
with multi-layer display plugins for gpsdrive, which may allow an
overlay of TIGER vector data (routing!) onto expedia/mapblast raster
maps (accuracy!).
