These prices are reasonable, if the maps are good and regularly updated (of
course with an extra charge for up-dates).

The license should not be a concern, because maps is data!! It is totally
unreasonable to assume that when you use free software the data that are
manipulated by this software also must be free.

Please everybody thinks this over.
The issue is that the owner of non-free data can in many cases dictate how that
data is used in the license for that data.

Unfortunately, I would not be surprised if NavTeq would forbid licensing their
data for use with any open-source application because of their desire to
license the data based on the features of the application. (e.g. voice
prompts/routing/etc are extra $$$). Note that they want people to sign an NDA
just to obtain *PRICING* information on their data.

i.e. there's nothing that prevents non-free data from being used with free
software, but there can potentially be many restrictions preventing free
software from being used with a particular non-free dataset due to that
dataset's license.

Re: GpsDrive on ZAURUS(Japanese Map)

Hellow Joerg, > Just have a look into the file po/ja.po there you find all UserInterface (UI) > text. you just have to translate these into Japanese. O.K. Now I am making 2.10pre2's ja.po. If UI hange anything for next version, please inform me. By the way. The following is my home map. This URL contain the position (deg/mm/ss), map scale(1/7000) and map size(1280x1024). And a lot of scales can be obtained. This is very convenient for me. :-) Only one probrem is not WGS84 position, this positioning is named "Tokyo". So I need excange the position. :-( http://www.mapion.co.jp/c/f?el=139/36/45.600&scl=70000&size=1280,1024&uc=1&grp=MapionBB&nl=35/31/36.300 -- This message was part of the gpsdrive mailinglist unsubscribing can be done by sending a mail containing a body of: -quote-- unsubscribe gpsdrive -unquote-- to majordomo-ahljRfkWE0EwtzFM8z8+AfP6llvjuJOh@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Unless, of course, we want to pay the full price for all features, which, as I envision it: * Handheld device support * Speech recognition * Text-to-speech * Heads-up display (projection on windshield) * POI * Multiple tracks * Traffic flow monitoring * 3D display, including topographical warping of map * Routing, including dynamic re-routing * WiFi mapping * (any other features that someone brilliant can come up with) Some of these features are already there, most aren't, but will be eventually. After thinking about the various features I'd like to see included, I decided not to follow up on the NavTeq queries. Some day, someone will bother to do this, but not me, now. Instead, I'm going to play around with multi-layer display plugins for gpsdrive, which may allow an overlay of TIGER vector data (routing!) onto expedia/mapblast raster maps (accuracy!).
