Well I am downloading maps from a server...
How does the server store the maps? (are they vectors and then the server
converts them to raster for us?)
it seems like the server doesn't have rasters because when I have 2 maps
really close in proximity the labels on the maps are not in the same place -
I can line up the roads and parks and stuff but the labels do not overlap
the same.
It would be nice if I could just make a local copy of their database
thingy...
"Some forethought makes it easy to have the maps needed."
This forethought is not normally in my life... what if my forethought is
that I wont leave the country - I should be able to download the whole
country right?

gpsfetchmap.pl is a much better way to get maps for an area.

Some forethought makes it easy to have the maps needed.

Maps don't have to overlap. That was a feature added later to help the
program
read ahead of where you were to have the next map up and loaded. Before,
loading the next map would cause the program to hiccup while it found and
loaded
the next map.

Well, Fritz, the creator or GPSDrive, doesn't live in the US, so those don't
do
him any good. So, GPSDrive was written based on what maps could be accessed
for
areas like Europe for little cost.

Seeing as how the maps are rasters to begin with, it would take a very
complex
and CPU intensive application to identify streets, railroads, rivers, parks,
etc... from the maps, line them up with other images for continuity, etc...
As
for getting a country at the smallest scale, again, look at gpsfetchmap.pl
(think that is the script name).
