You just set waypoints along your track and download these areas with 
something like.

cat ~/.gpsdrive/way.txt | 
   awk '{print $1}' | 
   while read waypoint ; do 
        echo "----------------------------"; 
        echo "Working on $waypoint" ; 
        gpsfetchmap.pl  -a 1 -w $waypoint --scale 1000  -F ; 
   done

If you use the cvs version of gpsfetchmap.pl the maps will not have any 
unnecessary overlap.

And you will be able to ask which coverage you have.
Just use:
   gpsfetchmap.pl    --check-coverage
