Re: hardware: msg#00215

Subject: Re: hardware
so i tried google:
i found your faq at http://gpsdrive.kraftvoll.at/faq.shtml

and noticed:

  Quick Start:

  Build GPSDrive (Requires GTK 2)
Build new kernel (or module) using "USB Prolific 2303 Single Port Serial
Driver (EXPERIMENTAL)" Load the new kernel || module
  Do: `mknod /dev/ttyUSB0 c 180 0` (If it doesn't already exist)
  Do: `chmod 666 /dev/ttyUSB0`
  Do: `gpsd -p /dev/ttyUSB0`
  Do: `gpsdrive`
  (provided by Todd E. Johnson)
Hint: You want to use a kernel >= 2.4.18. ;)

and now its not in simulation mode anymore
but it shows 0/12 then n/a n/a for the other 2 fields( i assume that means it cant find any satellites - its at my window - how long does it take to connect?)

anything else i should do?

are you serious about the 4 hour thing?

i plugged it in and my system log says:
Jan 27 18:48:36 localhost kernel: usb 4-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3 Jan 27 18:48:36 localhost kernel: pl2303 4-1:1.0: PL-2303 converter detected Jan 27 18:48:36 localhost kernel: usb 4-1: PL-2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0

when i disconnect it, it says:
Jan 27 18:50:39 localhost kernel: usb 4-1: USB disconnect, address 3
Jan 27 18:50:39 localhost kernel: PL-2303 ttyUSB0: PL-2303 converter now disconnected from ttyUSB0
Jan 27 18:50:39 localhost kernel: pl2303 4-1:1.0: device disconnected

when its connected i should do: gpsdrive -t /dev/ttyUSB0 right?
when i do this, it is in "simulation" mode

when i click Preferences and go to settings 2 tab
it has "Test for GARMIN" checked (should i uncheck)
it has /dev/ttyS3 as the interface (should i change to /dev/ttyUSB0)
it has baudrate of 4800 (should i change it?)

Not a lot - you will need to plug it in and leave it for at least four
hours, with a decent view of the sky.

The unit will probably do a cold start, depending on when it was last used
(and where!)
While cold starting it has to download/calculate a new almanac of satellite
motions, which has to start new if interrupted.

I just went to ebay and purchased the HoLux gm-210 usb gps.

When it arrives is there anything special I should know? (does it work
automatically or should I be looking for drivers or patches for it to work
with gpsdrive?)
