Re: Garmin Etrex Legend C recognition...: msg#00023

Subject: Re: Garmin Etrex Legend C recognition...
Yes, indeed, the module and usb2nmea converter both work as advertised!
Thank you all very much. It looks like I won't have to go and argue with
the nice young man at Best Buy after all...

The compilation instruction for the garmin-usb module is a bit sketchy,
but it's actually a very forgiving hack, and places the module in the
right spot.

Also, the latest version of the garmin-usb module is built against the
2.6.10 kernel, and can't be used with earlier kernels - so no problem, I
used an earlier version of the module.

Running kernel 2.6.9 compiled from kernel.org under a Debian Sarge
system on an HP Compaq nx7010 laptop - haven't upgraded to 2.6.10 yet,
because other drivers (proprietary) haven't been built yet against the
2.6.10. Sven wrote in a private message that he hadn't moved to the 2.6
series kernel yet as he was quite happy to date with the 2.4 series - My
only response to that is that one should use what is best suited to the
task at hand. I have to use the 2.6 series on this machine, as certain
features simply cannot be made to work otherwise. Conversely, I use a
2.4 kernel on my main machine at home because there's an ancient isdn
card in it whose chipset is so deprecated that it will only be
recognized by the 2.4 series. Performance wise, I've not seen a great
deal of difference outside the fact that the 2.6 has a smaller memory
footprint, and a better implementation of acpi.

Now I can explore this software...:)
