The right way to do this is with 2.6 kernels is to use udev.

I have the following rule in my /etc/udev/udev.rules file for my Garmin
eTrex Vista C:
SYSFS{idProduct}="0003", SYSFS{idVendor}="091e", NAME="gps"
That guarantees that any GPS that I plug in will be /dev/gps. I believe
that Fedora and some of the newer distributions come with udev today.
