Information Management

About: AgileWiki is a program that explores new knowledge representation.
It is an attempt to implement, at least in part, Norm Kashdan's Rolonic
Theory, a profoundly different approach to time and knowledge
representation. CowDb is a high-speed object store over which the next
generation of AgileWiki will be written.

Changes: All four known bugs were fixed. Names were added to all
persistent objects. Top is now accessible via association with the thread.

About: Aqualung is an advanced music player originally targeted at the
GNU/Linux operating system, and also running on FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and
Microsoft Windows. It plays audio CDs, Internet radio streams, and
podcasts as well as sound files in just about any audio format, and has
the feature of inserting no gaps between adjacent tracks.

Changes: A fundamentally new Metadata system using native decoders and
private code instead of TagLib to provide complete support for reading and
writing metadata. Support for RSS and Atom podcasts. Support for exporting
files from Music Store or Playlist with audio transcoding and intelligent
metadata transfer.

Wed, Dec 19th 2007 04:28

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
System :: Networking :: LDAP

About: Crowd is a Web-based single sign-on (SSO) tool that simplifies
application provisioning and identity management. It has connectors for
popular open source projects like Apache (via Perl) and Subversion.
Pre-built connectors for other popular commercial products like Cenqua
Fisheye, Jive Forums, JIRA, and Confluence are also available.

Changes: This is a major release that focuses on enhanced integration,
security, and usability. Crowd's directory permissions now allow
finer-grained control, so that you can define the permissions per
application. The Group and Role Browsers now display group/role
membership. Group management was enhanced in the existing Jive Forums and
Apache/Subversion connectors. A new connector lets you integrate your
Acegi security solution with Crowd. You can import your Bamboo users
directly into a Crowd directory.

[005] - AudioSpace 2.0
by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
Wed, Dec 19th 2007 05:07

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: AudioSpace calculates the amount of storage required by an audio
recording of a given duration, for different sampling rates, resolutions,
and numbers of channels. The calculation may be made for uncompressed
audio data or for several types of compression. A variety of units may be
selected for reporting the result. The calculation may also be inverted to
determine the maximum duration of audio that will fit into the available
storage.

Changes: It is now possible to perform the calculation in either
direction: storage from duration or duration from storage.

by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
Wed, Dec 19th 2007 11:00

About: BLAST is a set of similarity search programs designed to explore
all of the available sequence databases regardless of whether the query is
protein or DNA. It uses a heuristic algorithm which seeks local as opposed
to global alignments, and is therefore able to detect relationships among
sequences which share only isolated regions of similarity. It can be run
locally as a full executable, and can be used to run BLAST searches
against private, local databases, or downloaded copies of the NCBI
databases. It runs on Mac OS, Win32, LINUX, Solaris, IBM AIX, SGI, Compaq
OSF, and HP- UX systems.

Changes: Assorted minor bugfixes and code cleanups.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
System :: Archiving :: Backup
Utilities

About: Cedar Backup is a software package designed to manage system
backups for a pool of local and remote machines. Cedar Backup understands
how to back up filesystem data as well as MySQL and PostgreSQL databases
and Subversion repositories. It can also be easily extended to support
other kinds of data sources. Cedar Backup is focused around weekly backups

[022] - Fusil 0.6
by Haypo (http://freshmeat.net/users/haypo/)
Wed, Dec 19th 2007 02:52

About: Fusil project is a fuzzing program. Currently, it's specific to
Linux command line programs, but the code is designed to be used with any
project type (remote process, fake HTTP server, fuzz network socket,
etc.). It is based on a multi-agent system instead of a monolithic
architecture.

Changes: An "aggressivity" factor was created, which was used for mangle
autoconfiguration: the score of the previous session is used to update the
aggressivity factor, and this factor is used to compute the operation types
and the number of operations. Fusil is now portable: it works at least on
Linux, NetBSD, and Mac OS X. New command line options include
--max-success (default: 5), --quiet, --fast, --slow, --keep-all-sessions,
and --profiler. A new probe was added to process CPU usage and
ProcessTimeWatch. A function to wait until system load is low was created.

[044] - mpiBLAST 1.5.0-beta1
by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
Wed, Dec 19th 2007 11:02

Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics

About: mpiBLAST is an MPI based parallel implementation of NCBI BLAST. It
consists of a pair of programs that replace formatdb and blastall with
versions that execute BLAST jobs in parallel on a cluster of computers
with MPI installed. There are two primary advantages to using mpiBLAST
versus traditional BLAST. First, mpiBLAST splits the database across each
node in the cluster. Because each node's segment of the database is
smaller it can usually reside in the buffer-cache, yielding a significant
speedup due to the elimination of disk I/O. Second, it allows BLAST users
to take advantage of efficient, low-cost Beowulf clusters because
interprocessor communication demands are low. mpiBLAST achieves
super-linear speedup in situations where the database is too large to fit
into RAM, and near linear speedup in other situations. It does not require
a dedicated cluster.

Changes: Assorted enhancements and bugfixes. Updated dependencies on the
NCBI toolkit.

by KiyuKo (http://freshmeat.net/users/kiyuko/)
Wed, Dec 19th 2007 08:35

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: Poster is a fully featured blog application that has most of the
features expected from a Web log such as template support (the template is
modular and fully PHP-scriptable), categories, multiple authors, permalinks
(for post, comments, categories, and even authors), and a nice Web
interface. It works on plain text files and doesn't require a database.

Changes: A nasty bug was fixed in the admin section. Compatibility with
Internet Explorer was improved by replacing all the <button>s (which IE
can't handle properly) with plain links.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Sound Synthesis

About: Qsynth is a GUI front-end application for Fluidsynth. Fluidsynth is
a command-line software synthesizer based on the Soundfont specification.
Qsynth was built with the Qt4 toolkit using Qt Designer. Eventually it may
evolve into a softsynth management application that allows the user to
control and manage a variety of command line softsynths, but it currently
just wraps the excellent Fluidsynth program.

Changes: Among many other subtle fixes and enhancements, a new option to
start the program minimized to the system tray is now available. Minor
corrections to the output peak meter scale, achieving a bit more of
precision. Tool/child window positioning and size preservation was fixed.
Orphaned MIDI device names are no longer incorrect when switching between
MIDI drivers on engine setup. Messages line limit was not being checked;
it is now honored. Main panel spin-boxes are accelerated when stressed.

[068] - rsyslog 1.21.0 (Development)
by Rainer Gerhards (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgerhards/)
Wed, Dec 19th 2007 04:33

System :: Logging

About: Rsyslog is an enhanced multi-threaded syslogd. Among other
features, it offers support for reliable syslog over TCP and RFC 3195,
writing to MySQL and PostgreSQL databases, fully configurable output
formats (including great timestamps), the ability to filter on any part of
the syslog message, and on-the-wire message compression. It is designed as
a drop-in replacement for stock syslogd and thus is able to work with the
same configuration file syntax. Of course, some enhanced features require
changing the configuration file, but in general, this should be fairly
easy.

Changes: The main new feature is GSS-API support. This enables secured
syslog/tcp connections in a Kerberos 5 environment. This release also
contains a stability fix as well as a number of code cleanups. Users who
do not experience any problems and do not need the GSS-API support do not
necessarily need to update to this release.

Software Development :: Compilers

About: Scala is a modern multi-paradigm programming language designed to
express common programming patterns in a concise, elegant, and type-safe
way. It smoothly integrates features of object-oriented and functional
languages including mixins, algebraic datatypes with pattern matching,
genericity, and more. It is well integrated with Java and .NET: the Scala
compiler produces standard Java class files or .NET assemblies, and
Java/.NET libraries and frameworks can be used without glue code or
additional declarations.

[074] - Sylbi 0.06
by arbingersys (http://freshmeat.net/users/arbingersys/)
Wed, Dec 19th 2007 10:45

About: Sylbi is a conversation system that is not a forum and not a
blogging platform, but a combination of the two. It grew from the idea
that a blog with comments and a forum only differ in their perspective of
the conversation. Both provide a chronological set of postings, initiated
by someone, and, (potentially) replied to by others. The main difference
is the perspective they present: a blog presents the perspective of the
blog owner(s), while a forum presents the perspective of the forum and a
topic defined in the forum. Sylbi allows you to look at conversations
either way.

Changes: This release adds paging to blog view, adds blog navigation to
the user panel, and modifies the blog template to allow bloggers to remove
site specific markup. There has been a modification to the blog_config
table in MySQL. If you are already running Sylbi and want to add this
release without losing any data, see "upgrade.sql".

[075] - Systrace 1.6e
by Niels Provos (http://freshmeat.net/users/nielsprovos/)
Wed, Dec 19th 2007 04:32

Security

About: Systrace enforces system call policies for applications by
constraining the application's access to the system. The policy is
generated interactively. Operations not covered by the policy raise an
alarm, allowing the user to refine the currently configured policy. After
a policy has been sufficiently constructed, further alarms often indicate
security problems. Policies can also be generated automatically for
sandboxing purposes.

Changes: This release addresses a number of correctness and reliability
problems with the ptrace backend. Fixes were made for a potential escape
of socket aliases and a double free and a problem with fork and ptrace
(CVE-2007-4773).

[084] - XINS 2.2-alpha1 (Development)
by Anthony Goubard (http://freshmeat.net/users/agoubard/)
Wed, Dec 19th 2007 10:44

Communications
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Build Tools

About: XINS is a technology used to define, create, and invoke remote
APIs. XINS is specification-oriented. When API specifications are written
(in XML), XINS will transform them to HTML-based documentation and Java
code for both the client-side and the server-side. The communication is
based on HTTP. XINS competes with the complex SOAP technology. Main design
goals include simplicity, scalability, and testability. XINS is not only a
specification technology, but also an application development framework.
It offers transaction logging, unique log documentation, and active code
generation.

Changes: This version adds the ability to not deploy a dependency in the
WAR file. It is also possible to specify an extra XML element in the
generated web.xml. The front-end calling convention is executed with one
request per thread at a time. The mapping of the SOAP-MAP calling
convention has been improved. The percentage of memory used is shown in
the statistics. This release contains some bugfixes and small
improvements.
