[004] - BlockHosts 2.2.0
by Avinash Chopde (http://freshmeat.net/users/avinash1/)
Sat, Dec 15th 2007 23:34

System :: Networking

About: BlockHosts is a script to record how many times a local system is
attacked, based on configurable scanning of system logs for sshd or other
services. When a particular IP address exceeds a configured number of
failed login attempts, that IP address is blocked using hosts.allow files,
or by using null-routing, or by using packet filtering. An email
notification facility is also available.

Changes: Logging and mail notification were improved. Logwatch scripts are
now included to provide a summary of blockhosts activity. Mail can now be
set to send only if there are errors or warnings or notice level messages.

[007] - cvsxxdiff 1.2
by Michalis Giannakidis (http://freshmeat.net/users/mgiannakidis/)
Sat, Dec 15th 2007 14:09

Software Development :: Version Control :: CVS

About: cvsxxdiff is a utility designed to graphically display differences
between files in the local working directory and the CVS repository or
between two revisions on the repository. Convenient options to review
revisions of a file as it was n versions ago and the CVS log accompanying
that revision are provided. When invoked in conflict resolve mode, it
works as a graphical tool to resolve conflicts. Graphical output is
provided by xxdiff.

Changes: A new utility named cvsnup has been added. cvsnup inquires the
status of the local files with those on the CVS repository. It finds any
not updated, modified, or missing files and reports them in various
convenient ways. Also, it creates changelogs for any changes that have not
yet been merged.

[008] - CyberNeko HTML Parser 1.9.6
by Andy Clark (http://freshmeat.net/users/andyc2/)
Sat, Dec 15th 2007 03:50

Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: NekoHTML is a simple HTML scanner and tag balancer that enables
Java application programmers to parse HTML documents and access the
information using standard XML interfaces. The parser can scan HTML files
and "fix up" many common mistakes that human (and computer) authors make
in writing HTML documents. NekoHTML is written using the Xerces Native
Interface (XNI) that is the foundation of the Xerces2 implementation. This
enables application programmers to use the NekoHTML parser with existing
XNI tools without modification or rewriting code.

Changes: The license was changed to Apache 2.0 and the version number was
boosted to reflect the maturity of the project. Project files were
reorganized to decouple them from the rest of the CyberNeko Tools for XNI.
xercesMinimal.jar and source were updated so that NekoHTML compiles using
Xerces-J 2.9.1. The default behavior was changed to not normalize
attribute values and a new feature was added to allow users to turn on
normalization. The build was modified to target compilation for Java 1.3.
Suggested paragraph tag balancing was adjusted and various reported bugs
were fixed.

[010] - doublecpp 0.6.2
by Lorenzo Bettini (http://freshmeat.net/users/bettini/)
Sat, Dec 15th 2007 23:43

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Pre-processors

About: Doublecpp is a preprocessor for C++ that handles a new linguistic
construct for defining branches of a multi-method. The "right" branch of
such a method will be selected dynamically at run-time according to the
actual type of the object on which the method is invoked, and to the
actual type of the first argument: double dispatch. This basically
implements dynamic overloading in C++.

Changes: Warning error messages are printed correctly, so that they are
recognized as warnings (and not as errors) by an IDE. In makefiles,
non-standard make rules are avoided.

[017] - FreeDup 1.3-1
by AN (http://freshmeat.net/users/aneuper/)
Sat, Dec 15th 2007 13:11

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Analysis
System :: Archiving :: Compression
System :: Filesystems

About: Freedup finds and eliminates duplicate files by linking them, and
thus reduces the amount of used disk space within one or more file
systems. By default, hardlinks are used on a single device, symbolic links
when the devices differ. A set of options allows you to modify the methods
of file comparison, the hash functions, the linking behavior, and the
reporting style. You may use batch or interactive mode. Freedup usually
only considers identical files, but when comparing audio or graphics
files, you may elect to ignore the tags.

Changes: This release offers a much more efficient usage of the internal
hash function. This new default algorithm consumes a bit more memory, but
takes, in the worst case, about the same time as without hash calculation.
The file reads are significantly reduced and in a test case the wait time
for about 8000 files (48MB average) was decreased from 5 to 2 minutes.
This is about the performance of dupseek without the risk of wrong partial
results. The documentation was updated and a bug in statistics was fixed,
too. Please note that with this version the "-#" option now requires an
argument.

[018] - fwknop 1.9.0
by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
Sat, Dec 15th 2007 13:33

Security
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: fwknop implements an authorization scheme that requires only a
single encrypted packet to communicate various pieces of information,
including desired access through a Netfilter policy and/or specific
commands to execute on the target system. The main application of this
program is to protect services such as SSH with an additional layer of
security in order to make the exploitation of vulnerabilities much more
difficult. The authorization server works by passively monitoring
authorization packets via libpcap.

Changes: Support was added for NAT communications after a valid SPA packet
is monitored so that internal systems can be reached from the external
Internet. (This only works with iptables firewalls for now.) A test suite
so that SPA communications can be validated in an automated way added. The
ability to periodically restart the fwknop daemons based on a configurable
time interval was added. (This is useful for the extra cautious.) iptables
OUTPUT chain support was added for installations that do not have the
conntrack modules running and that use a restrictive OUTPUT chain.

[031] - mplay 1.0-beta4
by Romulus Pfeiffer (http://freshmeat.net/users/romuluspfeiffer/)
Sat, Dec 15th 2007 13:18

About: mplay is a console-based front-end for MPlayer. It plays most all
audio and video formats and features adjustable colors, a browsable
playlist, a progress bar, status information, an interactive shoutcast
stream browser, and interactive help, and remembers the position upon
quitting.

Changes: The xmplay shell script was added. xmplay will start mplay in a
new xterm with the saved size and its own defined color scheme. The need
to press several keys to add several things was replaced by a menu.
Type-ahead-search works now without holding the Alt-key. Mouse
initialization was fixed. The menu for changing colors was improved. For
compatibility reasons, some keys and shortcuts were modified. Some
work-arounds were made for shoutcast streams. The artist and genre filter
should now work as expected.

[035] - Pentabarf 0.3.7
by Sven Klemm (http://freshmeat.net/users/nevs/)
Sat, Dec 15th 2007 13:43

About: Pentabarf is conference planning software written in Ruby (using
the Rails framework) and PL/pgSQL.

Changes: There have been a few database changes. All varchar fields have
been replaced by text fields to remove arbitrary limitations. The most
important change is the addition of the conference_day table. The days of
the conference are no longer a start date with the number of days but is
now a list of individual dates which do not have to be consecutive. Those
days can be named and be marked as public so they will appear in the
schedule. There have been compatibility changes to make Pentabarf work
with Rails 1.2.6 and there have been a lot of bugfixes.

[036] - plptools 0.19
by Reuben Thomas (http://freshmeat.net/users/rrt/)
Sat, Dec 15th 2007 13:34

Software Development :: Libraries
Utilities

About: plptools lets Unix (mainly Linux) systems communicate with Psion
PDAs (and other EPOC devices) over a serial line. On Linux, an infra-red
connection is also possible. The following tools are part of the package:
plpbackup, a command-line backup program; plpftp, an FTP-like frontend
with some extensions; sisinstall, a SIS package installer; plpnfsd, a
daemon providing the Psion's file system via an NFS-mounted directory;
plpprintd, a print server for printing via a PC; and kio_plp, a KIOslave
which enables all KDE applications to deal with files on a Psion.

Changes: This release removes the KDE utilities and plpbackup, and
replaces plpnfsd with the FUSE-based plpfuse, which works much better. The
build system has been overhauled and radically simplified. plpftp has been
improved with support for the EPOC clipboard, and bugfixes to stopping and
starting tasks on the EPOC device were ported from plpbackup.

[037] - PySQL 0.11
by digitalfox (http://freshmeat.net/users/digitalfox/)
Sat, Dec 15th 2007 13:40

Database
Database :: Front-Ends

About: PySQL aims to be a full replacement for sqlplus (and much more). It
has features such as history, completion, and line editing. It has high
level functions (searching for tables, indexes, count, explain plan, list
of sessions, etc.), proper output for screen and files (CSV ready for
inclusion in spreadsheets), support for user-defined SQL, background
queries, graphical output for the schema data model, object dependencies,
a PL/SQL package function call tree, and much more.

Changes: All of the source tree was reorganized and was switched from a
custom build system to distutils. Installable packages are available for
Linux (RPM and Slackware tgz) and Windows. Pysql is now installed in a
standard Python site-package and a wrapper is put on the PATH. All
configuration and cache files are now in $HOME/.pysql/ on Unix and
%APPDATA%/pysql/ on Windows. The use of extended search patterns was added
to the search function and datamodel function.

Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: RabbIt is a mutating, caching Web proxy used to speed up surfing
over slow links like modems. It does this by removing advertising and
background images and scaling down images to low quality JPEGs. RabbIT is
written in Java and should be able to run on any platform. It does depend
upon an image converter if image scaleing is on. The recommended image
converter is "convert" from the ImageMagick package.

Changes: A problem with parsing HTTP/0.9 responses and a problem with
requests with no file information were fixed.

Sat, Dec 15th 2007 13:46

Desktop Environment
Software Development :: Internationalization
Terminals

About: rxvt-unicode is a clone of the well known terminal emulator rxvt,
modified to store text in Unicode and to use locale-correct input and
output. It also supports mixing multiple fonts at the same time, including
Xft fonts, real transparency, and an optional embedded Perl interpreter
that allows you to extend your terminal easily.

Changes: Libev was updated, working around a problem with the Linux 2.4
kernel and curing the problem of urxvt sometimes not refreshing in a
timely fashion. The -C option now works as expected. The urxvtd will flush
X events only once per display, not per open window. The slipwheeling
behavior has been improved. Text blinking will no longer take miniscule
amounts of CPU time when not used. There have been a lot of small code
cleanups and code size optimizations.
