Input/Output error indeed indicates that this is a damaged partition.
There is little to non chance that ntfsfix will work here.

libntfs/ntfsprogs are not intended to work on corrupted volumes (or
damaged volumes for that matter). So a crash is expectable in such
cases.

Can you run ntfsfix with "--log-debug --log-trace" and post the generated log?
What distribution are you using?
Did you install ntfsprogs from the distribution, somewhere else or
compiled yourself?
If you have debugging skills, can you run ntfsfix under gdb and post a
backtrace of the bug?
