I believe the driver is not involved.  I remember there was a patch for
an older version of the driver that was actually resetting the firmware
to achieve some stability of the monitor mode with 8.xx firmware.

It's not really an alternative.  I loads tertiary firmware into RAM,
which allows Master (AP) mode, but I don't think it allows monitor mode.
However, a similar mechanism for loading the firmware could be used to
load station firmware from Agere drivers, which could support monitor
mode better than 8.xx firmwares.

I don't understand your point.  I don't think HermesAP _tools_ need 2.4
kernel.  You can start with them.

The scripts for extracting ezusb firmware are useless as starting point.
They deal with completely different firmware.
