Porting the orinoco-usb driver to OpenWrt, where to start?: msg#00001

Subject: Porting the orinoco-usb driver to OpenWrt, where to start?
Hello,

I have an Asus WL-500G Premium wirless router/AP, which i OpenWrt on.
OpenWrt is a custom firmware for such routers, based on Linux. See
http://wiki.openwrt.org/ for more information about OpenWrt.

Now, the Asus WL-500G Premium has two USB ports, where you can attach
mass storage devices such as USB-disks. People have successfully
connected web cams and sound cards too, and got them working in
OpenWrt.

My goal is to connect an Avaya USB wireless client card to the Asus
router, effectivly getting an extra wireless interface on the router,
and then run the Avaya card in client mode agains another wireless AP.

Now here comes the tricky part: I realize that I need to port the
orinoco-usb kernel driver to the OpenWrt platform for this to work, and
I have no experience what so ever in doing kernel programming :)

Still, I want to have have a go at it, just for the learing part, so my
question to this list is:

1) Which part of the orinoco driver in the SVN repository is suitable
for my card? It's "Variant 1" shown on http://www.orinoco.host.sk/

I suspect none of the tags will work? I'm currently running the driver
from http://folk.uio.no/oeysteio/orinoco-usb/ on my SuSE 10.1 install,
and it works great, but Øystein states that his package is from CVS.
Is his driver from trunk? Or do I have to use the branches/usb code?

2) The Asus router has a MIPS architecture. How will this affect my
chances of porting orinoco-usb to this platform?

Thanks to anyone who can give me the slightest hint on how to procede
:)

Tor Arne
