It's for making releases distributed as tarballs, just like 0.15rc1.

The main trunk has USB support, which is not considered stable for
release.  Once it's integrated properly, the need in the "standalone"
branch will disappear and the releases will be made from the trunk.

It's your choice.  As it stands now, there are no major differences.  The
branches are kept in-sync.  I expect that the USB integration work will be
done in the HEAD only.

It doesn't have backward compatibility support.  It doesn't have code that
is not submitted to the kernel, such as debugging utilities.
