SD cards are supported in the gumstix kernel version. I am using them
all the time.
(See gumstix-buildroot/sources/kernel-patches/000-gumstix-sd-card-support.patch)

You only need MMC cards for reflashing from u-boot because of the
missing SD card support there.

But for SDIO you currently have to buy a driver:
