What version of make are you using?

when I do:

make --version

I get:

GNU Make 3.80
Copyright (C) 2002 Free Software Foundation, Inc.

PARTICULAR PURPOSE.

If you're not running GNU make, then you'll need to download it,
unpack it, and run:

./configure
make
make install

to build and install GNU Make. The construct used on line 240 is GNU
make specific, so I'm pretty sure that's the problem.

You can grab a copy of GNU make from here:
ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/gnu/make/

Get the 3.80 version.
