Great PDF, thanks. That article proves to me that an optical mouse input is not only feasible, it's relatively easy. I would imagine that with a little bit of power regulation, you could connect that to the GPIOs on the gumstix and have a lot of fun.

It turns out that the sensor uses SPI for communications and almost every
controller around can do that. I tried it with the KronosRobotics DIOS chip
and it works great. I did not have success getting it to work with the
OOPic but that is probably my fault - or maybe not...
