Is this due to a short circuit somewhere or a miswired connection?

Well the fact that you're seeing valid characters at all (i.e. the
u-boot message) suggests that the Tx wiring (from the gumstix
perspective) is just fine. Perhaps the Rx wire is screwed up (which
would cause a continuous stream of breaks?)
