I will do that. Currently, there are two Alioth groups. One is
the "Debian Documentation Project", with 24 members, the other
is "Debian group cvs_doc" with 37 members. I will ask for the
former group, if nobody objects.

I see. The Subversion repository could - for now - be used for
documentation that is not autobuild anyway. I will use it for
the Debian reference card (refcard), which is build manually.

There does not exist a SVN repo at the moment. But you could ask
for one in association with the Alioth DDP project (I don't believe
klecker has any SVN repos yet). The Alioth DDP project currently does
have a CVS repository although there is no SVN repository yet
(at least not in use IIRC). The only issue (already discussed in the list)
related to Alitoh would be automatic building of that document and
publishing of documents in the website. If a SVN repo is added we need
to change stuff in order to have the servers that build the DDP CVS
build from the SVN repo too. That requires intervention from the
debian-admin group...

Bug#324401: release-notes: Please suggest use of discover and hotplug in 2.6 kernel upgrade docs
Package: release-notes
Version: sarge
Severity: normal
Lately in the debian-user mailing list there have been a number of
problem reports from users upgrading from Woody to Sarge. They often
have trouble converting from the linux 2.4.18-bf24 kernel to a modular
kernel such as 2.6.8-2-686 due to missing drivers in the new modular
kernel. Recommending to them to install the discover and hotplug
packages usually solves their problems.
The pertinent release notes are here:
http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/release-notes/ch-information.en.html#s-upgrade-to-2.6
Please add a suggestion that users install the discover and hotplug
packages. I believe this would help users significantly. Here is
some suggested prose:
Users upgrading from a non-modular bootstrapping linux kernel such
as the Woody installer boot-floppies 2.4.18-bf24 kernel may need to
specify driver modules to be loaded for their hardware when
upgrading to the newer moduler 2.6 series kernel. The 'discover'
and 'hotplug' packages are useful to detect hardware and to
automatically load the required modules. It is recommended to
install those packages prior to upgrading to a linux 2.6 kernel.
The 'udev' package is also useful in conjunction with the linux 2.6
kernel the /dev directory. But see the warnings below in the
section "Switching to 2.6 may activate udev" for more detail.

Blessing DocBook/XML for Debian documentation?
Hi,
http://www.debian.org/doc/ddp says "We use DebianDoc SGML for
our documents", and the policy says the same. However, more
and more documents in and for Debian are in fact written using
DocBook/XML. My plea is to officially allow DocBook/XML.
(My personal reasons for preferring DocBook/XML:
- more mainstream, used by many large projects
- easy to generate *roff manual pages
- good-looking PDFs using db2latex-xsl
- I can use Emacs nxml-mode
- WYSIWYG addicts can use the non-free editor XXE
- supports images, tables, etc.
- relatively good support for many languages
YMMV, of course)
What do you think?
Cheers,
