Hmm, similar to the problem I was having with an old SiS chipset box, except I
wasn't even getting that far.

Yup, as it failed to install X properly that's not surprising.

There's a verify integrity of CD option in the installer and I'm sure there
must be a checksum somewhere (on the CD itself?) I doubt it's a problem with
the CD's integrity. I'm still wondering if it is having problems with some
part of your hardware. I guess we'll have to wait for Free to wake up.
