install troubles

My system is an Intel 685 motherboard, RME 9632 card, a SCSI disk, an
IDE disk, and a SATA disk.

I installed demudi 1.2 on the IDE disk. There are a few SCSI and X and
font irritations I think I could deal with, but it doesn't recognize the
RME card -- modprobe snd-hdsp says there is no device; during the alsa
startup at boot, there's a warning that there's no mixer; and jack says
it can't connect to the server.

lspci says there's a RME card, and it is seen during boot. And I've had
it running before, under Gentoo (it isn't anymore since I updated
something).

I've looked at the alsa documentation, but my solution(s) aren't there
(or I don't understand).

Suggestions please??? I'm stumped.
