newbie trying to get midi working

I downloaded and bootup off the Demudi LiveCD 1.1.1,
and all worked fine except that I don't think my midi
ports were recognized.

What troubleshooting steps can I perform to test if I
have midi ports setup, and if not recognized, what is
the first thing I should do to get them recognized?

I have 2 midi-via-joystick soundcards (eSS1868,
ALS100) and a midiman USB soundcard.
