CTRL + ALT + F3 will bring up a screenful of messages. This should tell you if 
it's a segfault or whatever at this point. The point where the system asks 
you which kernel version to install is right near the end of the 
base-install. Does it crash in the same place each time?

Please list your hardware specification.
