finding a summer internship in computer vision and pattern recognition

I am a graduate student in computer sci. Has anybody had any
experiences   
in getting summer internships in computer vision/pattern recognition?
I am interested in companies like hp, ibm, microsoft, google etc. I
submited resume but no answer. What else was I supposed to do? Do I
have to know somebody to get me in? or email the researchers there?
Any suggestions?
