Normalizing image

hi,
im finding opencv documentation not quite enough for me to find out
what function can do what i want.
anyway, how can an image be normalized to eliminate different lighting
conditions and noise etc.
does 'cvEqualizeHist()' does the same?

im new to opencv.. abt 2 weeks. may be im too new :-)
