You can use a webcam, BUT:

webcams don't have good spatial resolution

webcams usually have good photometric resolution
they usually have internal logic that compensates for average
intensity
they are often less sensitive away from the optic axis

you can use a webcam on opencv, depending on the resolution you want to have
you could need a more detailed digital camera...
