How about texture segmentation? 
   
  One time I see a work about this, using Gabor filters. Search Google about 
texture segmentation + Gabor Filter.

You can try to use a edge detector to detect the contours of the 
defects, then extract the contours and then try to extract the 
information you want from their shape or some other feature.
