Access to contour's each point

Hi  
I want to meassure the diameter of some contours. The idea is is to 
measure ech point of the contour and to get the highest and the 
lowest x value.But the problem I have is that I don know how to 
access to contour's point, i fsomebody could help me or had an 
example
