Announcing ALUT v1.0.0 Alpha.: msg#00144

Subject: Announcing ALUT v1.0.0 Alpha.

ANNOUNCING ALUT v1.0.0 Alpha.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, it's been a marathon specification/revision/rerevision/implementation
cycle - but version 1.0.0 (Alpha) of ALUT is now up on the OpenAL CVS
server.
Highlights:
~~~~~~~~~~~

* ALUT is now 100% cleanly separated from OpenAL and only uses standard
  OpenAL and ALC functions.

* It's a '.DLL' or '.so' - so it's released under LGPL on all platforms.

* There is complete HTML documentation.

* The exact same source code *should* compile for Windows, MacOS and
  Linux/UNIX.

* The file loader supports the commonest '.wav' varient along with
  '.au' and '.raw'.

* There is a built-in 'HelloWorld' sound so we can produce compact
  test/demo programs that don't require you to load sound samples from
  disk.

* There is a wide range of built-in waveforms - which you can use for
  testing or as additional test sounds.

* All routines that are likely to produce errors have proper error
  returns - and there is a mechanism for getting more detail about
  errors that mirrors the mechanism in OpenGL/OpenAL.

Problem Areas:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
* The only bug I'm aware of is that the '.au' loader seems screwed up.
* I have not yet put a clean set of autotools files up on the server - so
  you'll have to build it yourself - or be patient a little longer.
* There are no project files for Windows - also the weird headerfile
  junk that MSVC requires for DLL's isn't there.
* I've only tried to build it under Linux - so there could be some
  tiny portability drop-offs that I've missed.
Enjoy!
