Speaking _entirely_ for myself -- and this comment is _not_ meant to 
discourage this thread of conversation -- here's my two cents:
My general opinion on this is that it seems to me to be taking 
something that is inherently simple and making it very complicated.  I 
honestly don't think I could explain to another person what OpenAL is 
_doing_ using "transformation by matrices."  In contrast, it's pretty 
easy for me to both understand and explain our current model.
